silhouette digital cutting tool review and giveaway!

When I was working at Lasting Memories, I had a major wish-list item. I'll give you a hint. It cuts paper, vinyl, and heat transfer material, and you don't have to buy expensive design cartridges. If you guessed the Silhouette digital cutting machine, then you must have it on your wish list, too! If you have no idea what I'm taking about, prepare to be amazed. And to want one.

A few weeks ago, Silhouette sent me a free machine to try and review (I know--I've been dancing a little jig ever since!). I came home from Utah to this:

(Jiggety-jig!)

I spent the last year singing it's praises to customers in the scrapbook store, but now that I've had a chance to use the Silhouette myself, all I can say is that it really is AMAZING. I am full-fledged IN LOVE with this machine. Let me tell you why. No, let me show you why. Here is a sampling of some of the projects I've done since I received my machine (yes, I've been busy!):

My very favorite part of this tool is the ability you have to use your own designs and true-type fonts on your computer, plus digital image downloads from tons of great designers (think House of Three and Hero Arts) for only $.99 each (or less if you have a subscription). I have loved my Slice, and I'll still use it, but I hate having to buy a $50 cartridge, especially when I know I'll only really use a fraction of the images. My second favorite thing is how versatile it is. The software that goes with it is awesome. You can cut shapes and letters in any size increments you want, you can take images apart and only cut part of them (which comes in handy when creating a multi-colored image), and you can cut multiple images at a time (which saves time and paper). I really feel like I don't have any limitations with this tool. I can use it for my scrapbooking, card making, home decor, party decorations (think cupcake wrappers and banners!), clothing, even quilting (to cut applique templates). You're going to be seeing a lot with this machine from me.

I have so many great project ideas in my head for this tool, and I haven't even tried the glass etching cream, rhinestone templates, sketching pencils, or printable heat transfer material yet! Check out some more ideas here and on the Silhouette blog (which is incredible, by the way). There are tons of tutorials, FAQs, and great ideas on both sites. Here are a few things inspiring me:

The Giveaway
Okay, enough of my blabbering, here's the big news. Silhouette is letting us give away a FREE Silhouette SD cutting tool and a bunch of free accessories to one of our readers! (You should be doing a little jig about now, too!) Here's what our lucky winner will receive:

*Silhouette SD Digital Cutting Tool (retail price $299)
*Two rolls of vinyl
*One roll of transfer tape (for applying the vinyl images)
*A scraper tool (for applying vinyl)
*A CD of home décor images to cut
*$10 download card to buy new shapes on the Silhouette Online Store.

Are you kidding me? I really don't think we've ever hosted a giveaway this good before! This is seriously awesome, people! Here's what you have to do to enter. Visit the Silhouette Web site and check out all the great ideas and products. Then come back here and leave us a comment on this post stating how you would use the Silhouette if you won. That's it! Want extra chances to win? Link to this post on your blog or become a fan on our Facebook page, then leave us another comment letting us know and you'll get more entries! Just be sure to do it by Wednesday, July 14th at 11:59pm PT. And watch for new tutorials and ideas from me every day of the giveaway!

GOOD LUCK!

I know I already posted once on the 10th, but I got to thinking about what I really could do with a silhouette and here's what I came up with:

Make family photo frames w/ each name in vinyl for each family member
Onsies for my 9-mo old that have geeky sayings (for my husband) such as: "level 1 human" or "iBaby"
Always looking for cute projects for the women's group at my church
Scrap book the last 10 months
Make t-shirts with family names for my family reunion in August
Label all my Pyrex casserole dishes and bowls so I wouldn't keep losing them at church potlucks
Make a family photo/plaque to commemorate the birth of my son
Make cute t-shirts for my 2 nieces and nephew - the girls are VERY girlie, and love butterflies and princesses and flowers
Spruce up my little apartment with quotes and design.
and that's just the start.

At the moment I have a CriCut - but like your previous cutter, I have to pay $35-50 on one cartridge that will give me a few great designs and a lot of mediocre designs. Thank you for opening my eyes to the Silhouette!

I am already envisioning:
1. Some awesome little baby onesies using the sparkly glitter heat transfer material.
2. My bedroom is B/W damask and so I am thinking of entire wall of damask vinyl silhouettes.
3. I just moved my craft room upstairs! My hubby was kind enough to give me his 'man-cave' for all my stuff. I would love to decorate it using this awesome machine!
Pick me!!
Pick me!!
I will make you proud for sure!!

So many great uses! I would start by making labels for glass jars. :)

What a great machine! The ideas become endless but I think I would start by using the vinyl to decorate my kids room. Thanks for sharing your ideas with all of us!

ooo - I would love to win! Where would I start? um, sprucing up the walls in my home...making all containers look cute. Love the kitchenaid makeover!

Oh my, so many comments already. I never win anything, but it's worth a shot! I want to paint my front door black, and I would use the Silhouette to cut out the letters of my house address to put on the front door. :D

What WOULDN'T I do with it?! I'd have to say there would probably be a bunch of cute vinyl things all over my walls. :)

This looks like an amazing machine. I make ties for my dad for every holiday, and this machine would help me spice up the old ideas...

Also, I want to etch glass. So classy.

Wow there are so many comments on this one! I would use it for so many things, but really would love to use it for my package design work, and wall vinyls! Overall the possibilities are endless!

I'm also a fb fan now. I don't usually do that for extra entries, but I really would love to win this one.

I have wanted one of these for so long and can't seem to save up the money for it. If I had one of these there are several fun projects I would love to do for my home decor, but I think I would like to first create a vinyl tree for my wall to hang pictures around and have a fun "family tree".
