washer necklaces

We've been having a lot of fun this past year making these adorable washer necklaces. They are pretty inexpensive to make and you can make them to match any wardrobe.

Supplies:
Washers
Scrapbook paper
E6000
Diamond Glaze or Crystal Effects or similar product
Hole punch or Exacto Knife
Leather necklace
Nail File or Emory Board

If you have a hole punch the same size as your washer you can punch out the paper. If you do not, the glue the washer to the backside of the paper you want and then after it dries, use the Exacto knife to cut out the washer and the center holes. Be sure to use a brayer or something similar to get any air bubbles out. You want to make sure that the paper is glued down flat to the washer.

Next, take a nail file and gently file the edges to smooth it out and if you have a smaller file (these can be found at scrapbook stores or craft stores) carefully file out the center hole too.

Your washers should now look like this.

The next step is to apply the Diamond Glaze. Follow the bottle's instructions and add the glaze to the washers.

When the glaze dries, your new "pendants" are ready to be added to a nice leather necklace for a unique fashion accessory. The best part is that you can change out your pendants to match whatever outfit you are wearing that day so make a few in different styles and colors for variety.

what a wonderful idea. i would love to do this with my MOPS group at church. a couple questions: first, what did you use to glue the paper to the washer? the E6000? also, how long do they take to dry and does the diamond glaze kind of spread out to cover the whole washer, or how does that work?
if you could get back to me that would be absolutely splendid. if not, i guess i'll just give it a try and see how i do.
thanks so much for the great ideas and the super-fun blog.

This is so appropriate! I was given one of these for Christmas, and I knew it had to be hand made. I love it!

So neat! You come up with the best stuff :)

Hi Shana,

Yes, use the application tip to spread out the Diamond glaze. It will not run everywhere so you can control where it goes.
We used the E6000 to glue the paper to the washer. I suppose you could use any strong glue. The key is to make sure the glue covers all of the washer. If it doesn't, when the diamond glaze dries it will pull the paper up off of the washer. Have fun making these!

FUN!!! These are adorable!!

I love these also, but I too have a question. Do you do the same treatment for the back as you do for the front? Meaning are both sides done? Also what about the metal showing on the outer rim and inner rim of the washer? Are those covered? Thanks a lot!

I left the backside blank, but if you want you can also cover that. It might make a great reversible pendant.

How fun! I'm going to make some this weekend!!

Do you happen to know what size washers you used? I picked some up but I think they are a little bigger diameter wise and have a bigger inner hole. TIA!

I want to make these for a Young Womens activity, but can't find a local place that sells the diamond glaze or the E-6000 glue. Any suggestions?

Little Birdie Secrets said...

Danielle, any strong glue should work. It should be pretty tough though and really hold the paper down. Stampin Up has something called Crystal Effects and you can order it online. Click on the "Online Shopping" button in our sponsor section. I know my daughter is going to make some with her friends and just use Modge Podge. It won't be as shiny, but should work for her. Micheals may have another product that is similar to Diamond Glaze or Crystal Effects so ask someone there. They may be able to help.

Great project. How have you found them to hold up with the perspiration from the body or are they waterproof?

Hey, I tried making one and the glaze dried opaque and not clear. I wonder if it was a chemical reaction between the e6000 and the glaze; or if I didn't allow the e6000 to dry long enough; or if it's the humidity of where I live in MO. Anyway, how long would you say it takes for the glaze to dry??

Perla said...

Hello, I did a couple of this and they tend to stick to each other when I put them together, since I treated both sides with diamond glaze, is there something I can do to keep them from sticking together when I put one in front of the other for a necklace?

Great tutorial, we are going to make these Thursday at our mothers' group, I'm linking to your page so the moms can get a sneak peak :)

They were a hit at the group, and I came in waaaay under budget of $2/person :) I couldn't find the diamond glaze but Mod Podge's dimensional magic worked great :)

Has anyone tried to add glitter to the clear dimensional on top? I found a purple chain and was aleady planning on making magnets with glitter, so I figured I might as well try it. The glitter from Michael's is the color Grape Iris and the 36" chain is called Color Pop from bead landing, also in purple.

I just came across this project and had to try it! They are so stinking cute!! I used tombow glue, the one in the green bottle, and crystal effects. Worked great! I made 8 of them and have to go get me some more washers to make a ton more! :))
