silhouette digital cutting tool review and giveaway!

When I was working at Lasting Memories, I had a major wish-list item. I'll give you a hint. It cuts paper, vinyl, and heat transfer material, and you don't have to buy expensive design cartridges. If you guessed the Silhouette digital cutting machine, then you must have it on your wish list, too! If you have no idea what I'm taking about, prepare to be amazed. And to want one.

A few weeks ago, Silhouette sent me a free machine to try and review (I know--I've been dancing a little jig ever since!). I came home from Utah to this:

(Jiggety-jig!)

I spent the last year singing it's praises to customers in the scrapbook store, but now that I've had a chance to use the Silhouette myself, all I can say is that it really is AMAZING. I am full-fledged IN LOVE with this machine. Let me tell you why. No, let me show you why. Here is a sampling of some of the projects I've done since I received my machine (yes, I've been busy!):

My very favorite part of this tool is the ability you have to use your own designs and true-type fonts on your computer, plus digital image downloads from tons of great designers (think House of Three and Hero Arts) for only $.99 each (or less if you have a subscription). I have loved my Slice, and I'll still use it, but I hate having to buy a $50 cartridge, especially when I know I'll only really use a fraction of the images. My second favorite thing is how versatile it is. The software that goes with it is awesome. You can cut shapes and letters in any size increments you want, you can take images apart and only cut part of them (which comes in handy when creating a multi-colored image), and you can cut multiple images at a time (which saves time and paper). I really feel like I don't have any limitations with this tool. I can use it for my scrapbooking, card making, home decor, party decorations (think cupcake wrappers and banners!), clothing, even quilting (to cut applique templates). You're going to be seeing a lot with this machine from me.

I have so many great project ideas in my head for this tool, and I haven't even tried the glass etching cream, rhinestone templates, sketching pencils, or printable heat transfer material yet! Check out some more ideas here and on the Silhouette blog (which is incredible, by the way). There are tons of tutorials, FAQs, and great ideas on both sites. Here are a few things inspiring me:

The Giveaway
Okay, enough of my blabbering, here's the big news. Silhouette is letting us give away a FREE Silhouette SD cutting tool and a bunch of free accessories to one of our readers! (You should be doing a little jig about now, too!) Here's what our lucky winner will receive:

*Silhouette SD Digital Cutting Tool (retail price $299)
*Two rolls of vinyl
*One roll of transfer tape (for applying the vinyl images)
*A scraper tool (for applying vinyl)
*A CD of home décor images to cut
*$10 download card to buy new shapes on the Silhouette Online Store.

Are you kidding me? I really don't think we've ever hosted a giveaway this good before! This is seriously awesome, people! Here's what you have to do to enter. Visit the Silhouette Web site and check out all the great ideas and products. Then come back here and leave us a comment on this post stating how you would use the Silhouette if you won. That's it! Want extra chances to win? Link to this post on your blog or become a fan on our Facebook page, then leave us another comment letting us know and you'll get more entries! Just be sure to do it by Wednesday, July 14th at 11:59pm PT. And watch for new tutorials and ideas from me every day of the giveaway!

GOOD LUCK!

I don't think there is anything I wouldn't do with it!! I think the first thing would be the heat transfer for fabric - kids' clothes!! I really hope I win - no hope of being able to purchase it any time in the forseeable future.

I'd use it to decorate my daughter's room and make everything else in my house a whole lot cuter!!

stacey said...

I make a lot of little shirts for my daughter so I would for sure use the heat transfer, but all the possibilities look awesome. Thanks for a great giveaway!

I work lots in fabric and cutting stencils to apply paint would be marvelous.

But would enjoy some of the paper applications as well and love the wall pieces.

Lisita said...

I'd use it for a vinyl decor for sure but it'd be hard to know where to start in my decorating.

Wow, I wished I had heard about Silhouette before I had purchased the other product! What I would use this for is to teach my Grandchildren the fun of crafting. They are 2 and 3 years of age and we've been painting and using Playdo. Next will be the magic of Silhouette digital cutting machine. Can't wait!

Maria said...

I love how you put a little something pretty on your Kitchenaid! I would probably do that first. Then heat transfer for clothing definitely. Although the glass etching looks really cool to. How neat to make a vase for a wedding present that says the couples names or anniversary? Great giveaway!!

Lisa said...

WoW, what a great giveaway! I have been wanting a machine like this forever, but it's just not in the budget. I would put letters and numbers on EVERYTHING!

jharmonfamilyblogs said...

This little baby looks amazing! The possibilities are endless for all of the things that it can be used for. I love all of the crafts that you have done with it, especially decorating your Kitchen-aide!

I do have a cricket and can I tell you that I find it to be very limiting because of the cost of all of the cartridges that you have to purchase. I only have the basic one that it came with.

I know a million people are trying their chances for this and I most likely won't win it, but I am seriously considering getting one of my own and selling the cricket.

There are so many things to use it on that I don't know where to start. Definitely I'd be using it to help decorate my daughter's apartment with the lettering. She can't paint and has to keep nail holes to a minimum so this would help a bunch! I'd use it on an old bread box I have that needs to be repainted, etc. I guess the question is, "what wouldn't I use it on?" LOL! What a great tool!

Like everyone, I would use the machine for just about everything! I had a big long comment typed out, but blogger ate it. Therefore, short and sweet, I have a Cricut and am realizing its limitations in what I want to do - I think that the Silhouette appears to surpass it in relations to my desired crafting excursions (especially with personalizing clothes - think adding cute little birdies to hand-sewn dresses that are hopefully in my future). That and if I win I would promise to use it with all the freetime I can dedicate to it (without neglecting my family (too much!))

I would use it to decorate my walls and to make stuff to give away for my MOPS group...there are some seriously cute ideas.

Ok, I didn't read the directions very well, or I would have known to tell you what I'd do with the fabulous Silhouette if I won. I have no idea. Everything. First, I want to help my mom finish decorating my niece's room, and the Silhouette would be perfect, since the theme is SHOES! Second, I'm working on a landscape baby quilt, with some really difficult shapes - I know Silhouette says it doesn't officially cut fabric, but it can be done - so I'd have to try. I can go on and on. I'd never had a cutter, or any kind, so I'd be like a kid in a candy shop!!! (And I posted it on my blog, because you guys are awesome!)

i would decorate my room both here & when i leave for college in a year, just to bring a little bit of home with me. i think i would make just about anyone & everyone i know something, whether it be a heat transfer shirt or a little something to put on a phone or wall or laptop to think of me. i have this wonderful family that isnt even my own that is very dear to my heart, & she has these three beautiful kids who would just adore decorating with this.. OH MAN the possibilities!

there is no way I can narrow it down to one project- this machine is so cool and I can not wait to do so many of the things it can do! I had no idea this even was out there until looking at this blog post- forget wanting a Cricut I want the Silhouette digital cutting tool instead!

This is what I've been waiting for, a cutter that uses computer files instead of the expensive cartridges! I'd start with some wall designs for the cabin, and hot-rod detailing for bikes and such

I love everything! But I especially love the vinyl and heat transfer applications for home decorating and the possibility of custom T shirt designs.
