cup cozy and mmm, hot chocolate

Mmm, 'tis the season for a steaming cup of hot cocoa with a load of whipped cream on top. That's why I love fall! I find any excuse to drink hot chocolate. My in-laws even gave us a hot chocolate maker for Christmas last year. Sa-weet!

When I'm out, I love finding a Starbucks with a drive-through window. They make the most divine peppermint hot chocolate around the holidays, which makes holiday shopping bearable for me. You know when you pick up a drink from Starbucks and the cup is scalding hot to the touch? No? Oh yeah, that's because some genius invented a little cardboard sleeve to keep the heat from transferring from your cup to your hand. (Isn't there a movie where the main character claims to have invented that thing?)

We thought a fun cool-weather gift would be a fabric cup cozy that you could use with any paper cup for football games or sledding outings. All it takes is a little fabric of your choice and some Insul-Brite. This handy stuff is good for pot holders or any item where you don’t want to transfer heat, and you can find it at most fabric stores. Here's our simple tutorial.

Fabric Cup Cozy

What you'll need:
*Cardboard cup sleeve from your favorite coffee shop
*1/8 yard or scrap of fabric
*4"x12" piece of Insul-Brite (buy 1/8 yard)
*Sewing machine and coordinating thread

(Note: Our pattern was not printing correctly for some people, causing their final product to not fit. We don't want to mess anyone else up, so we have changed the directions to suggest tracing a cardboard sleeve instead of our pattern. Sorry to those who had troubles!)

1. Using the cardboard cup sleeve as a template, trace, adding 1/4" all the way around for your seam allowance, and cut out two pieces of fabric and one layer of Insul-Brite. Layer them starting with Insul-Brite, then one piece of fabric right-side up, and then the last piece of fabric on the top right-side down. Pin together.

2. Sew the three pieces together using a quarter inch seam all the way around, leaving a 2" space on one side to turn the fabric.

3. Make small clips in the seam around the corners and then turn right-side out.

4. Tuck in the opening you used to turn and iron entire cozy flat. Sew the seam closed from the right side, close to the edge. Match up the two short sides, tuck under the seam on top, and stitch together to make a ring.

That's it, folks! Your hand will now be safe holding that hot cup of cocoa or coffee, and you'll look great doing it!

Speaking of looking great, have you seen this AMAZING milk froth art going on in coffee houses around the world? There are some pretty talented baristas out there! Wow, makes my cinnamon and chocolate chips seem cheesy.

I also love Mexican Hot Chocolate. It is hot chocolate with personality. Aye Carumba! Here is a great recipe you can try at home. Or, buy regular old hot chocolate mix and add your own flavors! These flavored syrups are from Costco and last forever. My family loves hot spiced apple cider with caramel syrup and a lot of whipped cream on top. It just tastes like fall.

Very cool! Thanks for the tutorial.

BTW: The movie was Made of Honor with Patrick Dempsey. His character, Tom, invented it and it was called the "coffee collar" in the movie.

...the more you know...

That's right, Made of Honor. Thanks! I never would've remembered that, even though it hasn't been that long since I saw it!

Hey, just wondering what the fabric is that you used for the cozy. Love the pattern? Amy Butler?

The fabric is from Moda's Full Moon Forest line. It is the bunny print.

I love this cozy! I think I'll cut this longer, sew the ends up but not to each other, sew velcro to the outside and make it adjustable for different sized cups. Can't wait to try this!
