napkin throw pillows and other table linen makeovers

I have the hardest time finding throw pillows for less than $25, especially in fabrics I like. But napkins, they're usually a little better priced, and with styles from places like Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Ikea, Target, and more, there's got to be something that will match my decor. Here's a brilliant idea that is simple and affordable, and has limitless possibilities. Napkin throw pillows!

This is so easy it doesn't even justify a full tutorial. Just put two napkins right sides together (they can be the same or two different coordinating napkins), sew all the way around, leaving about a 2-inch space unsewn. Turn right-side out and push out the corners. Fill with polyfill, stuffing, or batting, and then sew the 2-inch hole closed (either with your machine, or by hand to hide the seam). If you're a more advanced seamstress, you can also make a cover for a pillow form if you want something you can take off. Just add a zipper.

Sew the two napkins along the inside hem line for a smoother edge on your pillow.

Can you believe how easy these are? If you can sew a straight line, you can make a pillow. And it doesn't even have to be a perfectly straight line (Jessica). There are tons of ideas for restyling table linens. Think place mats for a rectangular pillow, a valance from a table runner, curtains from sheets. . . The linens aisle is an entire decor store!

These are definitely a less expensive way to go. Each napkin I bought was around $3.
