free crochet headband and cuff {pattern}

The first week of September and it's still in the 90s here, so it's not necessarily crocheted accessory weather yet. But it is the time to start crocheting accessories because those cool fall temps will be here SOON. So I have two exciting things for you. First, it's a big sale in my pattern shops! Buy 3 get 1 free pattern in my Etsy and Ravelry shops through the end of the summer (September 21, 2013)! That's 4 patterns for only $12. And both Etsy and Ravelry offer instant download now, so you can start working on your projects, like now!

I also have a new FREE crochet pattern to share: the Criss-Cross Cuff & Headband pattern. It's a quick and easy way project to get ready for fall and winter. Perfect for last minute Christmas gifts, too. (How awesome would it be to get a few of those done before December? Hey, I can dream, right?)

Try clipping your favorite fabric flower to the headband for a fancier look. You can find a tutorial for this flower here.

Here's the matching cuff. I like wearing one on each arm under my winter coat sleeves to keep the cold air out.

I also love to pin a vintage brooch to the cuff to dress it up a little.

Here it is with a fancy yarn and a crochet flower. Totally different look.

Criss-Cross Cuff & Headband Pattern

Supplies:

Size G (4.25mm) crochet hook
Category 4 (worsted weight) yarn
Buttons

Gauge:

3 sts = 1"
1 row = 3/4"

Finished length:

Headband - 23"
Cuff - 8"

Stitches used:

Ch (chain), hdc blo (half double crochet in back loops only), dc blo (double crochet in back loops only), dc cross (double crochet cross)

Stitch explanations (American crochet terms):

Hdc blo and dc blo: Work hdc or dc into the back loop (furthest from you) of the stitch. See this video which shows how to work a slip stitch in the back loops only for reference (just imagine I'm working a hdc or dc instead of the sl st).

Dc cross: Skip a stitch, work a dc in the next stitch. Yarn over and reach back with your hook to the skipped stitch and work a dc in that stitch. Going back in the right direction, skip the next open stitch and repeat. See this video of a hdc cross for reference (just imagine I'm working a dc instead of a hdc).

Pattern Instructions for headband:

Ch 71.
1. Dc in 2nd ch from hk and in each st across. Ch 2, turn.
2. Work dc in blo of 1st st from hk and in next 2 sts. Work dc cross across until 4 sts remain. Work Dc in blo of last 4 sts. Ch 2, turn.
3. Hdc in blo across. Ch 3, turn.
4. Work dc in blo of 1st st from hk and in next 2 sts. Work dc cross across until 4 sts remain. Work dc in blo of last 4 sts. Ch 2, turn.
5. Hdc in blo across. Ch 3, turn.
6. Dc in blo of next 3 sts. Work dc cross across until 4 sts remain. Work Dc in blo of last 4 sts. Ch 2, turn.
7. Dc in blo of 1st st from hk and in each st across. Finish off and weave in ends.

Overlap one end 2" to 2.5" (so it fits snuggly on your head). Position buttons in a spot where they will fit through holes of overlapped end. Sew on directly below. Headband is adjustable by buttoning it tighter or looser.

Pattern instructions for Cuff:

Ch 27.
1. Hdc in 2nd ch from hk and in each st across. Ch 3, turn.
2. Work dc in blo of 1st st from hk and next two sts. Work dc cross in each st across until 4 sts remain. Work dc in blo of last 4 sts. Ch 2, turn.
3. Hdc in blo of 1st st from hk and in each st across. Ch 3, turn.
4. Work dc in blo of 1st st from hk and next two sts. Work dc cross across until 4 sts remain. Work dc in blo of last 4 sts. Ch 2, turn.
5. Work hdc in blo of 1st st from hk and in each st across. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Overlap ends about 1". Position 1 to 3 buttons (according to your taste)

Another great tutorial! I like to sew in daylight hours and crochet at night. This looks like a perfect quick project with lots of possibilities! Thanks for making the pattern available.

Thank you for the pattern. I was just looking for a headband pattern to make for my daughter. What is that sequence/sparkly yarn that you used? She loves bling that girl! ;-)

I am also wondering where you bought the yarn for your headband? So cute!

Thank you for the pattern. It looks simple but with style. I'm going to make my daughter one.

I did 71 chain but I'm almost done and this is going to be way too small to fit my head, was this pattern to fit a child?

Thank you for this pattern. I love it! It's easy to make yet it looks nice! I did 3 headbands this weekend. The first one I did, I followed the pattern and started with 71 chains... definitely for a child. My other 2, I did with 85 chains.

Si gave the 71 chain to my grandson and then made one at 81 and it was better

I did 85 for adult with G hook. I did 31 for the cuff. Is the gray sequin yarn a chunky yarn? It looks thicker in the picture.

I have done this pattern twice . Love it but somehow I add a stitch somewhere cus its wider at one end

71 chains was exactly the right length (23") for me using chunky and a 6mm hook. I had a certain yarn I wanted to use, so I just crocheted until I had the right length and luckily 71 worked!

I was a bit stuck at the start and ends of rows but the completed headband looks good. I was not sure whether '1st ch from hk' was in the base of the turning chains or not... anyway it looks good so that's all that matters :) I am going to make some matching mitts based on the cuffs to start with then made longer and maybe in the round.

It's a lovely pattern, thanks!! :)

Thank you for the pattern. Here are a few changes I made. I used a 5.5 mm hook with WW and DCFDC 70, chained 2, skip the first chain from the hook and start the row. The numbers work out better this way.
Thank you again for the pattern.
