easy father's day treat ideas {for large groups}

I have been involved with making the Father's Day gifts for all the men in our congregation for the past four years or so, and after looking through our past ideas, I thought some of you might be looking for similar ideas for larger groups of dads. Father's Day is coming up fast, so here are my samples and a PDF of each tag so you can download, print, and cut your own in no time at all! I've started a Web site where we can offer printables and downloads. It's still under construction, but check it out and download the PDFs here.

M&Ms Candy Gram

Attach this simple tag to a pack of M&Ms candies, which you can buy in large quantities at Costco. It reads: "Many thanks and Much love - Happy Father's Day"

100 Grand Candy Gram
You can also find 100 Grand candy bars at Costco. Attach this tag to show Dad how much he's worth! "You're worth more than $100 Grand! Happy Father's Day

Movie Popcorn Treat
Another Costco find--microwave popcorn. The tag says, "Happy Father's Day to a great Pop!"

The other ideas I helped with I didn't have tags for, but they wouldn't take long to make.

*Attached to a can of Dad's root beer: "Pop pop, fizz, fizz, oh what a great dad you is!"

*Attached to a Big Hunk candy bar: "Happy Father's Day to a Big Hunk!"

*Make a boutonniere out of a Sugar Daddy sucker and a ribbon. Glue a pin back on the back. No tag needed!

Go here to download the featured Father's Day tags!

vinyl crafts giveaway

Today we would like to introduce you to a fabulous etsy shop called Vinyl Crafts!

I have only met Becky of Vinyl Crafts through some email exchanges but I can already tell she is one impressive lady. She had me at "I have nine children..." That is seriously amazing!! Here is a little bit more she told me about herself, "I am happily married to one amazing man and mom to nine incredible children. My days are filled with all the wonders, joys and frustrations that come with a house full of people ranging in age from teenagers to babies. The creative outlet this shop provides helps balance out my sanity {and I realize “sanity” and “nine children” are not often used in the same paragraph}

I LOVE chocolate, vanilla coke and running.  The running part is a necessity if you like chocolate and vanilla coke.  And if you have nine children.  I have run a couple of half marathons and am going to be training to run a marathon. I have taken my love for home décor and my love of crafts and combined them to produce the items you see in my shop. I hope you will find something you enjoy and that can add beauty to your home. I especially love the personalized items I get to design.

Vinyl Crafts has a variety of wooden signs, wall decals, subway art, typography, and a variety of wall vinyl decor. Here are a couple of my favorites...

There are so many great ones to choose from! Today Vinyl Crafts is giving one of our readers the chance to win a $50 gift certificate towards anything in the shop.  Lucky you! All you have to do is visit the Vinyl Crafts shop and look around.  Then come back and tell us what you would spend the $50 on.  This giveaway will end Tuesday, June 14th at 11:59 pm PT.

"hitched" banner {wedding photography prop idea}

Some of you know that I used to work at the Stampin' Up! corporate offices (best job ever!). If you are a Stampin' Up! demonstrator you may know my friend Pam Morgan that I worked with for many years (and you're probably jealous that I can call her my friend!). She is seriously amazing. I also had the chance to manage her son Kristjan for a while, and he is a great guy. Recently Pam asked me to make her a Kindle cover like the one I made my mom, and during the course of our conversation Kristjan came up. She sent me these pictures of his wedding last summer and I about died. Isn't she a gorgeous girl? Wow, good job, man! I am impressed.

Anyway, I fell in love with this darling "hitched" banner the couple was holding in one of their pictures and asked Pam if I could share it. Isn't this the cutest idea? (And isn't her dress to-die-for?) With summer wedding season in full swing, I thought some of you would love to have this idea for your big day. Pam made it using Stampin' Up! supplies. I bet if we bugged her enough she'd even share what they were on her blog. Leave me or Pam a comment and let's see if we can get it out of her! (Click on the picture for a closer view.)

Oh, and in case you were wondering, here's the Kindle case I made her. I knew she liked bright colors, and this piece in my stash from Heather Bailey just screamed Pam. Makes me want a Kindle or Nook just so I can make a case for myself! If you already have one, get the tutorial here.

you have to try this {frosting rosettes}

Recently I spotted these gorgeous frosting rosettes on Pinterest and just had to try them. I followed the tutorial by the fabulous I Am Baker, and I am happy to say they were even easier than I thought they'd be!

I helped a friend with refreshments for her daughter's baptism last weekend and whipped these sugar cookies up. They are darling on cupcakes, too, instead of the big pile of frosting (although that's not a bad way to go!) I really think it was quicker to frost them like this than with a knife. And they look so much yummier! Okay, they are yummier because they have twice the frosting, but luckily I don't count calories at special celebrations.

My friend coordinated the cake with the same technique. Isn't it gorgeous? We all thought this would make a beautiful wedding cake!

And it was heartily enjoyed by all.

pillow fight - for a cause

We're so excited to be guest posting over at the Cap Creations blog, and let me tell you why. Not only do we love Cathy and her creations, but right now she is promoting a very cool contest going on called Pillow Fight--For A Cause. It all started with a very talented 14-year-old girl named Malynn who has spent a lot of time in the hospital this year. In an effort to help other children who have serious medical conditions, she has made it a goal to donate 100 bright cheerful pillow cases to Primary Childrens Medical Center, to brighten up the patients' rooms! Isn't that sweet? Malynn thought it was so helpful to have her own pillowcase in the hospital to cheer up the room, and make it seem more like home, and she wanted to share that with others.

Ladybird Ln has come up with an awesome contest to help her out. It's a Pillow Fight--For A Cause, meaning the best handmade pillow creation wins! And there are four really great prizes! For every entry in the contest, you must 1. enter a homemade pillow (of any kind) you have made and 2. donate one pillow case to Malynn's efforts. Easy, right? We thought this was an amazing way to reach out and help others while doing something we love (and going for a great prize!). So we're featuring this easy Pillow Case Tutorial (one of our original tutorials that the amazing Stacy created waaay back in the beginning!). Head on over to Cap Creations to see our easy Pillow Case Tutorial and get working on your entry!

klutz fabulous flowers giveaway

We love Klutz! They always have such great books for kids and adults to create things to their heart's content! I am always impressed by what new books they come up with. Klutz has a great new book, called Fabulous Flowers!

Let your creativity bloom with this book of can’t-go-wrong instructions for life-sized, dimensional, paper blossoms inspired by our favorite flowers: roses, daisies, daffodils, hibiscus, zinnias, cosmos, poppies, and larkspur. Sparkly embellishments, fresh paper colors, whimsical design variations, and a custom shaping tool give these blossoms a twist that’s pure Klutz — and quite possibly, even prettier than the real thing.

As always, Klutz has packaged the book with everything you need to get started: 20 pages of ready-to-punch-out paper petals, sparkly flower centers, wrapped wire stems, glue, and of course, the custom winding tool — enough stuff to make bunches of flowers.

Ages 8+
$19.99

Here is a little peak inside...

Doesn't it look so fun?

Today, two lucky readers have chance to win a copy of Fabulous Flowers!! All you have to do to enter is visit Klutz and find your favorite book (besides this one) and then come back and tell us what it is. For a second entry you can "like" Little Birdie Secrets on Facebook. You better hurry because this giveaway will end Friday, June 10th at 11:59 pm PT.

death by chocolate recipe {flourless, gluten-free chocolate cake}

Recently we had friends coming from out of town to visit, and I wanted to have a spectacular dessert to share with them. They know good food, so it had to be something really special. My friend Stacy suggested the Flourless Chocolate Cake recipe she found on AllRecipes.com. When I heard it was a gluten free chocolate cake recipe, I admit I was a little skeptical. But she assured me it was absolutely fabulous, so I went for it. So glad I did. SO glad. Although my thighs might not be so glad. It is the richest, most delectable, most amazing chocolate dessert I have ever tasted. This is what they mean when they say "death by chocolate." It's more like a dense, fudgy tarte than a cake. I can't explain it--you'll just have to try it. This would be a perfect dessert for your Father's Day or graduation get togethers, whether you're celebrating with someone with a gluten-free diet or not!

Flourless Chocolate Cake Recipe or Death By Chocolate (adapted from AllRecipes.com)

1/2 cup water
3/4 cup white sugar
18 (1 ounce) squares or 18 oz. chips bittersweet or semisweet chocolate (I used semisweet)
1 cup butter
6 eggs

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Grease one 9 or 10-inch round cake pan and set aside.

In a small saucepan over medium heat combine the water and sugar. Stir until completely dissolved and set aside.  Either in the top half of a double boiler or in a microwave oven, melt the chocolate. Pour the chocolate into the bowl of an electric mixer. Cut the butter into pieces and beat the butter into the chocolate, one piece at a time. Beat in the hot sugar-water. Slowly beat in the eggs, one at a time.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Have a pan larger than the cake pan ready, put the cake pan in the larger pan and fill the pan with boiling water halfway up the sides of the cake pan (I used a 9x13 pan for this).

Bake cake in the water bath at 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) for 45 minutes. The center will still look wet. Chill cake overnight in the pan (or put in freezer for about an hour). To unmold, dip the bottom of the cake pan in hot water for 10 seconds and invert onto a serving plate. If it doesn't come out perfectly, simply smooth out any cracked or uneven surfaces with a knife. Serve cold topped with homemade whipped cream and berries. I used my warm blackberry sauce recipe and it was just the right touch of tart for the richness of the chocolate.

Blackberry Sauce Recipe (works great with raspberries, too!)
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 c. water
1 1/2 tsp. cornstarch
1 c. or more fresh blackberries (or raspberries), washed

In a saucepan, stir sugar, water, and cornstarch until the sugar begins to dissolve. Cook until it starts to boil. Add berries and stir, boiling until thickened. This is also delicious over vanilla ice cream and buttermilk pie!

etched glass art (and a silhouette trace tool tutorial)

READ THE REST OF THIS POST -->>>» |

I'm super excited to be guest posting at one of my all-time favorite blogs today! I am a little obsessed with my Silhouette machine, so I visit the Silhouette blog daily to get tons of inspiration and tutorials. I always find new ways to use my Silhouette there. That's why I'm so honored to have my project featured! Whether you have a Silhoutte digital cutting machine or are just wishing for one, check out their blog for tons of great project ideas and tutorials.

And now for the tutorial. . .

I've been wanting to try glass etching for a while, and when I saw this Echo Park Flower shape in the Silhouette store, I knew it was perfect for my project. The only trouble was that it's a print and cut shape. But with a little fiddling, I figured out how to take the print and cut image and turn it into an image that could be cut into vinyl for my glass etching idea. Sweet!

To turn a print and cut (or any jpeg image) into a file that can be cut, you need to trace it. After opening and sizing your shape, go to the Trace menu and select your shape within the bounding box.

Next, increase the Threshold so that your image shows clean lines where it can be cut. I increased mine to 56%.
