how to crochet a flower video tutorial

One thing I love about crocheting is that there are so many ways you can use it to create embellishments. From decorative edging to flowers, you can dress up a t-shirt or a scrapbook page with your hook and just a little yarn. Lately I've been obsessed with crocheting little flowers--maybe because they're so quick and satisfying! I altered a few other flowers I'd tried and came up with my favorite 5-petal flower pattern. I'm sure I didn't invent it, but it came about for me by trial and error and it turns out cute with almost any kind of yarn. Here are a few items I've made recently with flowers. Check out these and more now in my Etsy shop!

If you want to make your own, we've made a short video tutorial to show you just how to do it. I'm a visual learner, so I know some of you out there just need to see it done once to figure it out. Check it out, then find the written pattern below. WARNING: This is not a general crochet lesson. You'll need to know how to do a few basic stitches to complete a flower.

Or, watch it on YouTube. It's a bigger picture, but the picture and sound quality aren't as good.

Mandy's Favorite 5-Petal Flower Pattern

Materials:
Any size hook (depending on what size flower you want)
Any weight yarn

Rnd 1: Ch 5, join into a ring w/sl st in 1st ch.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 9dc in ring, join to top of ch w/sl st -- 10 sts.
Rnd 3: **Ch 2, work 3dc in next st, ch 2, sl st in next st** five times. Fasten off.

For a different color center, try changing yarn colors after round 2. Experiment with different weight yarns and hook sizes. To layer a slightly smaller flower on top, go down one hook size from larger flower.

Love love loved this. I have those basic skills, but never knew what they were called. I can't really follow patterns because I've never had anyone show me what a "double crochet" is and now I know! Yay!

Thank you for this. I'm going to make one this weekend! And if it comes out okay, I'm totally going to blog about this fabulous video. Please do more of these, I love videos! Even a simple scarf would be great too.

Thank You! I've seen written instructions for making flowers, and I couldn't quite follow them. It looks so much easier when you have a visual! Awesome!

Bonafyde said...

What an immense help this!!! i loved the tutorial and am fully confident hat i can make these cute flowers. I have plenty of written instructions but nothing beats visually watching how it is done and especially in a clear and accessible video that can be played over and over while trying it out! No worries of annoying anyone by asking them to please show me how to do it just one once more....lol
Thanks for taking the time to share this! :)

Thank you so much for doing a video on this - I have seen written instructions but as I have very limited skills I could never follow them, but with your video it will be easy - thanks so very much.

Hi
Great video, I really think I could do this myself after watching this. Although, the video is kind of small... Is there anything you could do with it so that I can expand to fullscreen, so I could see better? Or maybe you could post it on YouTube, there is a fullscreen-toggle there. I tried making the flower (and I'm a complete newbie at crocheting), but I think something went wrong, cause when I got done with my 4th petal, there were no more stiches to make the 5th petal, so I figured I must have done something wrong somewhere. I'm sure I could figure it out if I could see the video in a larger format on my screen. Hope you'll consider doing what I asked for above =) Thanks, bye!

I've been making your crochet flowers for hair clips for my girls, but I'm wondering what brand or kind of yarn you use. The yarn I have seems to fuzz out, if that makes sense. Is there a favorite yarn brand that you use? Thanks!

Great Tutorial...sorry to ask again because I can see that others ahve already asked, but please PLEASE post the tutorial - I really want to give this a go!

Thank you for the video tutorial. As soon as I watched it, I grabbed my hook and yarn. When I was done, I sewed the flower onto a hat that I just completed.

Thank you so much for posting this video. My neice taught me to crochet a beanie hat but we ran out of time to do the flower and she lives in a different state. Now I can add a really cute flower to my daughter's beanie hat. Thanks again. Katrina

This is great! I'm totally clueless to crochet and can only make the basic scarf and blankie with the basic stitches!!! I don't even know what you aall them stiches!

Anyway, I followed your Flower tutorial for almost an hour (undoing and redoing!!) and am so pleased with the result.

I have a question though - At the very end where you cut off the excess thread, is it normal for that tiny knot to be visible?

Thanks for this tutorial!

Wow. Thank you so much for this. I just started a crochet class and am in the midst of a simple hat--my first project. I thought it would be much cuter with a flower, googled, and found your tutorial. I made one on my first try, and I hadn't even learned a double crochet stitch yet (the video was enough). Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Have put off making these little flowers because the patterns I found were to difficult! A ball of Knit-Cro-Sheen and a #4 hook later and three run throughs of the video and I have something that looks like a flower. Not bad since I was never very good at crochet and haven't had a hook in hand other than to repair something in years. Thanks!

Oh, and all the little hats and shoes are just too cute. Like the little black one with the holly.
