royal icing flow is hard--really hard

I saw this wonderful "Top Ten" list over at Sweetopia on how to decorate sugar cookies using "icing flow." I was so excited because she made it look so easy. Marian, you are one talented woman. Whew! Easy is not a word I would use to describe royal icing flow work. My hands just cramp up thinking about it. This is something that you will need to practice--a lot! I am not discouraged, though, and I am determined to be a decent sugar cookie decorator, so I still see lots of cookie baking in my future. I know my kids are excited about that.

I really like her royal icing recipe and it was super easy to make. I am sad to say all the imperfections and such were all my doing. I can't blame the icing. I have now added a Kopy Kake projector to my ever growing wish list of craft supplies. I am sure if I could just project the picture on the cookie they would be much cuter. Right?

Well, I am off to bake some more sugar cookies because practice makes perfect!

{Note: This is Mandy, and I have to cut in here and say that these cookies turned out AMAZING! They were so stinkin' cute and delicious. I couldn't believe what an incredible job she did. You're too hard on yourself, Stacy!}

If you are determined to master royal icing, check out the book Cookie Craft:

It is amazingly helpful, and the pictures are beautiful!

Those are adorable! I tried the 'flow icing' technique at Christmas for the first time and can't wait to try again. My hips need a rest though. ;)

Those cookies look beautiful to me! I have never tried working with that kind of frosting, but I have heard from others that it takes practice.

Super YUM! I so want to eat that cookie, and it's kind of sad it's in the virtual world... I think I'll have to find a (not nearly as good) substitute, and then try this at home when I can!

They look delicious!
I'm up for practicing that!

They ARE adorable! I love the image, the colors, the matching ribbon - you did a GREAT job!
You should have seen my first cookies! Wish I had pics.

Thanks for mentioning me and for the compliments b.t.w.
I can't take all the credit - the KopyKake helps for sure; I can doodle, but I can't draw!
Have fun decorating!

Marian

You are all so sweet. I have to say though, I decorated 20 cookies and these were the ones I was willing to show off. The others were pretty funny. :) Stacy

I think they are perfect! They look so yummy. Are they soft cookies, I adore soft, frosted sugar cookies! What recipe do you use for the cookie, if you don't mind sharing?

I cheated with the cookies. I used the roll in the refrigerated section. I added a little bit of flour to it. The cookie was really good. The frosting gets pretty hard though.

It gets easier with time. Your hands will get super strong and you'll be cranking them out like nothing.

They are darling, btw.

it does get easier.....and those look AMAZING...I feel the same way everytime I make cookies....I think YOU see all the imperfections because you spent all the time on them....when everyone else looks at them they just see the BEAUTY and AWE!!.....and when they're delicious.....that's all they really remember!......i LOVE these!
I posted my Valentine cookies with Royal Icing just a few days ago....I had a hard time because my 13yo daughter helped with mine....so some are a little "less than perfect"....but still beautiful!♥

I was just squinting at my computer trying to figure out what in the world your "imperfections" were....I couldn't find any?! Super cute.

I use royal icing every christmas to decorate my cookies. I've done it so long I think I'm a pro. Well, that may be stretching a bit but I'm definitely comfortable using it. I fold my own parchment bags and everything.
