how to crochet a heart
I am so excited to share another how-to video for my current crochet obsession: hearts! Many of you liked our how-to crochet a flower video, so I know I'm not the only one who sometimes learns better by watching. Sometimes just seeing it done makes all the difference! These little sweethearts are simple to make using basic crochet stitches. And, after a little practice, they take me less than 2 minutes start to finish. They are the perfect size to incorporate on a card or scrapbook page, or on baby accessories. We'll even be using them on our LOVE banner for the Meet & Greet party. If you don't crochet, I've added these to my etsy shop, so you can still feel the love.
Crocheted Heart Pattern
Supplies used:
Size D crochet hook
Size 3 crochet thread or embroidery floss
(Or use any size hook/yarn you have on hand--it will just change the size)
All stitches worked into the first chain.
Ch 4. Work 3 tr (triple crochet) into first ch, 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr. Ch 3, sl st into center and fasten off.
After playing around to create this pattern, I noticed Skip To My Lou has a similar heart pattern. She started with this basic shape, but added two more rounds to make it larger. You can add one or both of her rows to make different sized hearts like I did. But my favorite are still the tiny hearts--so sweet!
Good luck with your hearts, and let us know if you have any questions. I'm no crochet expert, but I've made enough mistakes along the way to have learned a thing or two!
I'm so doing this, but what is the DR abbreviation? I get CH - Chain and TR - Tripple... Think... I'm pretty new to crochet...
ReplyDeleteCUTE!!!
ReplyDeleteI am going to try this tomorrow!
Thanks for posting!

ReplyDeleteOh one question--how do I make bigger flowers? I'm a novice to crocheting so I need all the help I can get :)
ReplyDeleteSuccess x 2 I did the heart with ease and with the confidence it brought I attempted the flower again which I couldn't quite master and yep you've guessed it I succeeded, yah!!!
ReplyDeleteSo thanks again for posting these two tutorials.
Thank you so much! The possiblilties are endless with this sweet little heart!

ReplyDeleteYippee! I just picked up some spring colored yarn and have been on a crochet kick all day (finally got the flower down from your video). I just made a heart from this vid and I am thrilled to add it to my things-I-can-crochet list (and I learned triple crochet, too!) Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHow do I fasten off? I don't want it to come undone! Do I have to tuck the ends in somewhere with a yarn needle?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your idea and your help.
How do I fasten off? I don't want it to come undone! Should I tuck the ends into the heart with a yarn needle?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help and the idea!
Here are the answers to the questions we've had so far:
ReplyDeleteMiss Angie--I think you meant the abbreviation dc. That stands for double crochet. I don't think there was a dr in the pattern (but let me know if I'm wrong!).
Mare--there are a couple of ways to make bigger flowers (or hearts). The first is to use a thicker yarn and bigger hook. Play around until you find the size you like. Another way for the flowers is to use taller stitches on the petals. So instead of a double crochet, try a triple. Or instead of a triple, try a double triple. Remember, to make a taller stitch just wrap the yarn around an additional time, which will give you more loops to pull through. This will make your petals bigger.
Renee--to fasten off at the end, cut your yarn (leaving a little tail) and pull that tail through the loop. Pull tight. Then you can either clip it close to the knot or weave your tail into the body of the heart (or flower). I don't bother weaving my ends in unless it is going to be an item with a lot of use. But for an embellishment that is not going to be washed or handled a lot, I don't bother.
Hope that helps!
Beautiful!! Thanks for the brilliantly easy pattern! :)
ReplyDeleteI MADE IT!!! And it is sooo simple!!! I love it! I'm just thinking of ways to use the wee little hearts for gifts & cards :)
ReplyDeleteok I loved this..super cute, SUPER easy!! I have been crocheting some hearts using another pattern, but this one is super simple and you can also use (which I did) larger yarn and a bigger crochet hook for a bigger heart too!!! Thank YOU!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm covering my eyes...they are gorgeous but I don't need to take up another craft! LOL...
ReplyDeletethank you!!! i was try... its easy and cute! my daughter happy from new toys:)))

ReplyDeleteThat's so cute! I really want to try crochet sometime, thankyou!
ReplyDeleteawesome tutorial! even a novice like me can whip out my stuff and make one! can't wait to try it! thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI bought some yarn (because I'm away from my own stash), and I think the crochet thread would probably be easier, nicer, and shinier (which is cuter for hearts). Just FYI for everybody! I still like mine, though! Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteAnother great video tutorial. I practically learned everything I needed to crochet watching your earlier flower video.
ReplyDeleteI just made one of these hearts out of super chunky wool/acrylic yarn in deep red and it turned out great. I'm going to make some brooches and headbands out of these ;) Thanks!

ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this! I have never tried to crochet before, but this video made me go out and get a hook and some yarn!
ReplyDeleteTwo questions- what did you use to make the bigger hearts?
-How do you keep the first stitch from getting bigger as you work?? I find that as I'm working, it just keeps expanding!

ReplyDeleteOoh these are adorable. guess what I'm off to try !!!
ReplyDeleteThankyou for sharing your little hearts and tutorial on your blog. (thanks Dawn for the link!)
Shaz :)
WOW!! I found your blog yesterday. First, let me say that I (A) started crocheting not even 2 months ago, and (B) am left-handed, so this had the possibility of not being the easiest thing in the world. ;)
ReplyDeleteI made one of your flowers yesterday, and just finished doing a heart. I also learned how to do a slip knot, the TC, and finishing off by watching you. Although it took me longer, LOL, my heart looks AWESEOME, and I can't wait to attach it to the scarf that I made for my 7yo (along with the flower)! I'm thinking that these would be soooo cute to make for her friends as well (for Christmas gifts)!
Your instructions are extremely clear, and the angle from which you're recording is perfect. I'm so glad that I found your blog! THANKS!!!
What another great tutorial..Thanks so much for your inspiration. I love hearts and you make this so easy.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much! Your videos are so great, just what I needed, to watch and learn! I tried the heart first and was glad I did - it seems a little easier than the flower.
ReplyDeleteThanks AGAIN!!!
Just came across this cute little heart and gave it a try...easy peasy, even for someone like me that hasn't had a crochet hook in my hand for years. Thanks for the clear instructions and video! I'll be slipping a few of these into some Valentine cards this year!
ReplyDeleteLove your hearts! Starting making crochet hearts yesterday during our blizzard! I am going to use your pattern today! Love your blog...it's going on my favs! Blessings....

ReplyDeleteThanks for posting.
By any chance do you know how to do the shamrock, my grandmother made one for me years ago but unfortunately all my stuff from my grandmother was burned in a house fire. She made me the most gorgeous green shamrock vest that I would wear every St. Patrick's Day in addition to a shamrock pin.
:)

ReplyDeleteI taught myself to crochet a few weeks ago so I could make Christmas presents :) I'm making bookthongs and your heart pattern is perfect. Do a long chain (90+), crochet the heart on the end, hey presto a heart bookthong to go with the foil choc hearts I've bought! Thanks!!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the tute! My granddaughter is in Kinder and they have to collect 100 of "something" (she chose hearts) for the 100th day of school. I told her I'd make her 10 hearts for her board. So far I have one made from macaroni, one from foil, and now this one from pink variegated yarn!

ReplyDeleteMy husband wanted to surprise me for Valentine's Day with a crocheted heart. He found this tutorial, my yarn, and hooks and went to town. Since he is completely new to crocheting, let alone doing hand-crafts, he realized that he either needed to throw in the towel or ask for help. With a little bit of coaching, he finished his heart and is so pleased. Thank you for posting. This is certainly the sweetest Valentine's gift I've received: a heart crocheted by my husband to keep in my pocket so I can feel his love wherever I go.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your expertise, even though the heart is a lovely simple shape its brill for beginners, I´ve made several of them and have crocheted them into a little new born baby welcome - bunting style.
