diy star wars shirt {with decoart ink effects}

My boys love anything having to do with Star Wars. Buying all the licensed toys, legos, shirts and everything can get pretty expensive! When I recently received the new DecoArt Ink Effects line to try out, I new right away that I had to do something with Star Wars. Using a page from my son's Star Wars coloring book and paint from DecoArt Ink Effects, I made a Star Wars shirt!

Here is what I received from DecoArt Ink Effects to try out. Ink Effects paint in an assortment of all colors, and the Ink Effects Basecoat to use on fabrics more than 30% cotton.

The first thing I did was decide which coloring pages I wanted to paint and found the colors of paint that I wanted to use and I got to work painting the page!

Keep in mind that I decided not to paint the word yoda onto the shirt, but if you did want to, you would have to reverse the letters so they wouldn't show up backwards on the shirt when it is transferred.

Tip: Be very liberal in the paint that you apply. The darker and more richly you paint the image, the better. Keep in mind that the paint won't transfer as boldly as you paint it.

Also note that if you want the outer edges of the coloring page to show up, you must paint them! Any in between details that are not painted in a different color will not show up.

The DecoArt Ink Effects work best on fabric that is no more than 30% cotton. However, you can use it on other fabrics, you just have to be sure you apply the Ink Effects Basecoat. Spray it over the entire area of the fabric that you want to transfer paint onto. It needs to completely dry before the image is transferred.

After you have finished painting the image, let it dry completely.  When it is completely dry and the basecoat is completely dry (if using it) then you are ready to transfer the image. Lay the image face down onto your fabric and cover it with another sheet of plain paper. Iron all over the surface for 3 minutes and apply a little bit of pressure. Make sure you get all areas of the painting.

Then peel off the painting and your image will be on the fabric! My son loves his shirts and next time I think I will let him paint with DecoArt Ink Effects for an original painting he makes to be transferred! It is such a fun way to preserve kids art or to make custom items that they want.

For more tips and project ideas visit DecoArt Ink Effects on Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube.

I wrote this post as part of a paid campaign with DecoArt and Blueprint Social. The opinions in this post are my own.

4th of july mantel display {decor ideas}

I barely got a picture of this before it all got packed up to be shipped to Utah! One more holiday mantel display with these basic pieces (I've used them for my Christmas, Valentine's, and Easter mantel displays, too!). This has really made decorating for various holidays super easy. Here are some simple 4th of July decor ideas using the same pieces and some stuff I had around the house (see the links to past tutorials!).

I started with this framed sheet music (it's first incarnation was as a Christmas card holder). I draped an old, faded American flag on it and propped a wooden star from my boys' room in front of it.

Then I moved my coffee filter flowers to a milk jar filled with red marbles, and tied a metal star (from Hobby Lobby) to the empty frame used here, here, and here for other holidays.

I found this darling Fourth of July subway art free printable from HMH Designs and put it in my painted thrift store frame (used with other printables here, here, and here).

With the big frame turned on its side, I felt like the display needed some height. So I made a few of these accordion folded pinwheels (tutorial here, video tutorial here) above the frame.

Voila! I would've loved to have added a paper bunting to the mix, but all those empty boxes (and a screeching 6-month-old) were calling me! ;)

We hope our American readers enjoy a safe and happy Independence Day! We are so thankful for all the men and women (and their families) who have served our country in war and in peace. Happy Fourth of July!!

cat in the hat party {guest post}

We are excited to have a guest post from our dear friend, Melynie today! She recently threw a Cat in the Hat party for her little guy and we were in awe of her creativity. We just had to share it with you...

Happy 4th Birthday to my little Buddy!!  What a fun 4 years it's been with this kiddo.  We celebrated in Seussy style.
Favor bags:  sidewalk chalk, bubbles, spikey blue ball that looks like a 'Thing' to me (Target), Dr. Seuss alphabet stickers (Michaels), balls and kazoos (Target).  They also got pinwheels and goldfish crackers.
 The bunting was easy to make.  Two yards of polka dot fabric and 4 pkg extra wide, double fold white bias tape.

 Kid table with a goldfish (swimming), some goldfish (Pepperidge Farm), and striped tablecloth (ordered a 100 yd roll from Oriental Trading Co).

Made cleanup easy on myself with striped paper straws (Amazon.com), plastic deli baskets and liners (Joann Fabrics)
 Cat in the Hat pops made from a slice of one jumbo marshmallow, three regular big marshmallow, and strips of strawberry fruit by the foot.  Strung them on skewers and had an instant treat!
 Love that responsible little goldfish in the book, so we had goldfish all over.  Here are little bags (Target) with handmade labels (paper from Michaels).
 Pinwheels (a kit from Michaels) doubled as decoration and favors.

I found a picture of the fish online, printed it out and taped it to a real goldfish bowl with tissue paper 'water'.
 The hat on the table is from the "What's in the Cat's Hat?"
 game and doubled as centerpiece and party game.
 His 'cake' was a bunch of Thing-y cupcakes (used the star tip and buttercream frosting).  Cut out the cupcake flags and wrappers on my cricut.
 Daddy ran the photo booth.
 We had a basket of costumes and accessories that they could use for props.

picnic at the park {with a little help from world market}

Remember how I told you about my new-found love for Cost Plus World Market? Well, of course since that first encounter, I have been back to the store several times. Probably too many. So when we decided to have a picnic at the park last week, of course I stopped there to gather some supplies. What happened? Well, of course I found everything I needed (and more). I love Cost Plus World Market because they have the best supplies for parties, picnics, bbqs, and pretty much everything else!

First up, I snagged myself a picnic tote. I love this one because it is large without being too large and it is also insulated for cold items. I have a feeling we will get much wear out of this before the summer is over.

I also raided this aisle of goodies for some fun items for my kids to play with at the picnic.

They had a fabulous sale on beach umbrellas. I have been wanting a beach umbrella for quite a while and since we go to the beach and picnic at the park a lot, I thought it was the perfect time to get one. I love that it is so easy to set-up and also has a shoulder bag to pack it in, so it is so easy to carry with you wherever you go!
The last item I bought for my picnic, might be my favorite. I found these adorable food baskets and liners. These are so fun for a picnic or BBQ. They are easy for the kids to hold and they are so cute too!

You might want to go and buy yourself some new summer items at World Market because right now when you make a $20 or more purchase in the store you will receive a 15% off coupon for Southwest Airlines to purchase a flight anywhere Southwest Airlines flies!

Also be sure to enter the Summer Getaway Sweepstakes. Each week during the sweepstakes World Market is giving away a trip for 4 anywhere Southwest Flies, including hotel accommodations and a $500 World Market gift card!

Be sure to visit World Market on Facebook and on Twitter so you are in the loop for all the amazing deals and promotions!

This shop has been compensated by Cost Plus World Market, but all opinions are my own.
