We're tickled to have Bethany from Ribbon, Glitter and Glue sharing some darling cards today! Bethany is uber talented and has to-die-for style sense. She currently designs for Citrus Tree Studio, Paper Issues, and Hip 2b Square Scrapbooking. I love that she uses a good mix of the latest papercrafting products and older stuff from her stash. I'm pretty much enamored with everything she creates. I know you'll be inspired by the designs she's sharing here, so read on to find out how you can link up your Bethany-inspired card and enter to win all five of hers!

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Little Birdie Secrets, happy birthday to you! I'm delighted for the chance to help my friends at Little Birdie Secrets celebrate three years of crafty goodness!

Today I'm here to share some birthday cards that I created using Pink Paislee's Soiree Dimensional Stickers. The Soiree collection is one of my favorite releases from Winter CHA! It is bright, cheery and has just the right amount of sparkle! It didn't take much more than some scraps of paper, a bit of ribbon, tulle and crepe paper, a few vintage buttons and some mist to make up these fun & festive birthday cards. I do hope you're inspired!

xoBethany
(Other products used: Basic Grey, Crate Paper, October Afternoon)

Ready to run out and get your hands on some Pink Paislee Soiree? Me too. If you were inspired by one (or all) of Bethany's cards, link up a photo of the card you made and you'll be entered to win this stack of cards! We'll pick our winner on July 31, so be sure to link up before then. We can't wait to see what you create!

watercolor salt paintings for kids {birthday bash guest post}

We're excited to have a fun summer kids project from Make and Takes today! Usually you find us guest posting over there, but Marie agreed to help us celebrate our 3rd birthday with a fun kids craft from her site. How lucky!

I'm happy to be over at Little Birdie Secrets guest posting today! We're trying a fun new technique for our watercolor pictures using salt. It's a great way to bring a little texture to your art.

Each child was armed with a paint brush, watercolors, and a piece of white cardstock paper. I also give them each their own cup filled with a little water to wash out paint. Then I let them go to town with color.

Sometimes I draw an image on pencil for my kids to watercolor the inside. This way, they can focus on the design of the image and not worry about where or what to paint.

Once each picture was complete, we took a clear wet paint brush and got the whole picture wet again, as some parts had dried. Then I gave them our salt shaker to sprinkle a little, or a lot, of salt to their paper.

We let the pictures sit for a few hours, making sure the paint and salt were dry. When they're dry, shake off the excess salt that may come off as it dries.

The pictures turned out so fun! It was great for the kids to see what the salt on the colored water could do, soaking up and expanding some of the color.

Be sure to check out Make and Takes for more kid crafty fun.

what are your kids reading this summer?

Having three little boys is a busy job. Especially in the summer. Sometimes it can be a tough job to find entertaining and educational things for my boys to do. Each day I want them to spend some time reading. I absolutely love reading and I want my boys to love it as well. I think it is a very important skill to have and really helps them to succeed in school. I try to make summer reading an especially fun activity. We love to go to the library to pick out books and we joined the local summer reading program.

Lately my recently graduated 1st grader has been enjoying some chapter books in the Magic Tree House Series. He loves the adventure in them and it is especially fun for him to read it aloud to his younger brother, which I love!

I am always looking for recommendations of great kids books, so share some!

Tell me what your kids are reading this summer for a chance to win a Summer Reading Prize Pack from the Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club!
- Grand Prize:Pottery Barn Kids’ reading chair and a Marc Jacobs Nylon Tote (for mom!)
- 5 First Prizes: Personalized Pottery Barn Kids’ Beach Tote
EXTRA ENTRY:
- Children’s Book-of-the-Month is now featuring the My Summer Reading Series! Kids receive 2 great books at their door each month all summer. $6.99 a book PLUS a free $25 Restaurant.com gift card! This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Children's Book-of-the-Month Club. The opinions and text are all mine. Contest runs June 28 - July 22, 2011. A random winner will be announced July 27, 2011. Official Rules

kids door sign tutorial {birthday bash guest post}

Hello! We are very excited that Mandy asked us to share with you today!

We are the ladies at HowDoesShe.com. We are a site dedicated to finding out "How Does She?" by collaborating ideas on how to become the mothers, wives and world class women that we want to be! We have collected recipes, fashion tips, crafts, home decor, ideas for the kids, ideas for the parents, and some home organization ideas! Come check us out!

Kid's Bedroom: Cute Door Sign!
Come in...It's PLAY time!

My girls needed something fancy on their door so we came up with this idea. They share a room so we had to design a sign with 2 names on it.
Hey, if they get to claim their bedroom as their own maybe they'll take care of it. OR maybe that reasoning will shoot me in the foot when they say it is theirs and they can do whatever they want to it.
If you have one kido, just make the back board just a tad shorter.
I got my girls enlisted to help out. We...(they don't use saws...yet) I cut:
1-1x8 18 inches long
and
2 2x7 quarter inch mdf boards

come-in-10
For the vinyl we (they did help me with the vinyl) cut 4 strips. They measured 1.6 x 5 inches
1. Please Knock!
2. Come in...It's play time!
3. No Boys Allowed...except Dad (you could easily modify this to No Girls Allowed...except Mom if you have boys)
4. This Room is Clean!
Their names and the word 'room'.
I just used Black Vinyl. I chose a plain font. Nothing fancy because they need it to be easy to read so the boys can see it from far away.
If you need vinyl strips click here. If you need a cutter to cut your vinyl strips click here.

They chose their paper and were on their way! Mod podging at its finest!

We drilled 2 holes in the top of the board and strung wire through it. The wire we found at Lowe's. Nothing fancy. Then due to a husband's request, we added soft sticky felt things to the back so it doesn't scratch the door. I'm glad I have him. I didn't even think about that part until he put his request in:) Funny that small thing made me love him more...

Bring the wire through and twist with your needle nose pliers... so it won't fall out. My font on this one is "Larger Mime" BTW. Do you know what the number one question I get asked? "What is the font you used?" I wish it were "Can I give you money?"...but it's not.
I will try and tell you the font each time, but if I don't...I'm sure someone will ask:)

Here's another shot of wire twisted. Really? another shot...ya. I thought it looked cool! And you know my tutorials are the longest in the world!

Finish the little strips of wood. Do the front and back so that you'll have 4 signs on 2 boards.

Now if you are going to mess up on one make sure to put the 'room is clean' vinyl on it. I know this from experience because it hardly gets used so no one will ever have to see it. The one they use the most is the 'Come in...it's play time' makes sense. I'd rather play than clean too!!!

We used the first of the hooks on our $4 frames? So, here's your chance to use up that last few that are hanging around.
Pre-drill a small hole into the top center of your small boards where you want the eyelet hook to go.
Screw the eyelets in...Stop before you split the wood...ummm I didn't.

Do the same with the hook. Pre-drill and twist the hook into the large board. About 3 inches from the bottom.

Hang the 2 small boards from the big board.

Here it is again. I tried to take a picture of it on their bedroom door, but my hall is dark and the picture didn't turn out very well. So just imagine it as you enter into a princess land of play time!

Or for a boy...enter into a land of dragons and dinosaurs! When my little boys get older you betcha I'm going to make one for them too:)

one little e-mail, one huge blessing

Thank you to Yahoo! Mail for sponsoring this post about staying connected. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

I'm taking a small break from packing so I can keep my sanity! As I'm going through closets and finding all sorts of treasures and memories, I can't help but be a little reflective and a lot emotional about this move (I can only partially blame pregnancy--I'm pretty weepy naturally!). My kids have grown up so much in this house. My youngest was only six months old when we came to Seattle, and my oldest was two. Now they are five and seven and are little boys with opinions and talents and memories of their own. They've started school here, learned how to ride their bikes here, and made so many great friends here.

When we came to this area to look for a home, I was devastated at the enormous prices and small inventory of the real estate market. When we narrowed it down to two choices, it seemed like an impossible decision. There was the converted apartment, tiny with no yard, but priced nicely within our budget. Then there was the condo, as large as a home with a huge yard and two-car garage, but way out of our price range. I cried most of the drive back to Salt Lake.

A few nights later, I was out of town for a little getaway with my parents while my husband was stuck at the hospital. We were both still stewing about our decision, not quite sure what the right move for our family was. Late that night I received a long e-mail from my husband. (Augh, getting weepy just thinking about it!) In it he told me he had been thinking and praying about this decision, about where we should settle our little family for the next five years. He had an overwhelming confirmation that we should buy the condo with the yard. He said that he felt strongly this is where the Lord wanted us. That even though it would be more difficult to make the payments, the Lord would provide for us. I cannot tell you how many times I have felt that same confirmation over the last five years, as I've found close friends, been a part of an amazing church congregation, and fallen in love with the little city we call home. In fact, I'm 100% positive this blog would not have been started nor become what it is today if I had not been here. This is truly where we were supposed to be, and we have truly been blessed for following that prompting. This house is really our home.Yes, it's been hard to cover our mortgage some months, and yes, the commute into Seattle has been torturous at times for my husband, but the blessings far outweigh those difficulties. I saved that precious e-mail, and have been thankful so many times that my sweetheart put those words into writing instead of a phone call. I have often reread them at times when I have felt discouraged or worried about money, and it has carried me through. What a blessing technology is!
In this time of wondrous technology, I'm often a proponent of the human touch--sending cards and gifts rather than texts and e-mail. But I must say that I am so thankful for that technology. That I can send a quick e-mail to keep in touch with a friend, or put into words something special that I want someone to know right now. And that I can search my e-mail inbox to find that sweet message from my sweetheart any time I want. I loved the new Yahoo! campaign that included this video about using e-mail to say "I'm sorry" to someone you love. So cute!

little birdie rolls {tutorial}

Thank you for all the sweet comments about my temporary hiatus and life changes! I am especially glad to know that I have new friends waiting in Iowa City! I feel a craft night coming on--who's in? That's one thing I'm especially going to miss--crafting with good friends. Even though Stacy isn't a blog partner anymore, she still influences the things you see here, like these darling birdie rolls! She brought the dough over one day and we had a blast making these tasty little birdies.

Little Birdie Roll Tutorial

Start with your favorite yeast roll recipe. We used a porterhouse recipe Stacy found on the Internet, but you could also try my quick and easy Thanksgiving roll recipe. Proceed to the point in the recipe that you're ready to shape the dough and bake them.

Roll the dough out and cut it into strips, approximately 1" wide by 4" long.

Carefully tie the dough in a knot, creating a short piece on one end and a longer tail on the other end. Shape the shorter tail into a beak.

Flatter the longer tail and use a knife to cut three or four tail feathers.

For the eyes, we cut dried blueberries into tiny pieces and pressed them into the sides of the bird's head. You could also use a peppercorn.

Space your birdies out on a baking sheet and bake according to your recipe's directions.

As soon as the birdies come out of the oven, immediately brush with melted butter. Then press a sliced almond into the point of the head for the beak.

Our recipe did not call for salt, but instead instructed us to sprinkle kosher salt on top. But go with what your recipe recommends.

Enjoy your sweet little birdie friends! Yum!

conversation piece quote blocks {birthday bash giveaway}

We're so excited to start our birthday month off with a great giveaway! Several months ago a group of awesome ladies I work with at church got together to make these darling quote blocks for birthday gifts for the teenage girls at church. It is part of our theme for the year.

We packaged them up and have a whole year's worth of gifts ready to go!

My friend Lisa, who put the project together, had so much fun doing it she decided to make a few more, and from there her Etsy shop was born! The name of her shop, Conversation Piece, comes from Lisa's personal motto: "Surround yourself with uplifting words." And she makes it really easy to do that with all her cute blocks and awesome quotes! She also uses the cutest patterned papers. They make really sweet gifts as well. Here are a few of my favorites. . .

Conversation Piece is giving away a regular sized Conversation Block of your choice (plus free shipping!) to one lucky winner. To enter, just visit Lisa's Etsy shop and leave us a comment with your favorite quote from one of her blocks or wall hangings. You can also get an extra entry by marking her shop as a favorite on your Etsy account and leaving us a second comment. We'll pick our winner this Saturday, so be sure to leave your comment by Friday, July 8th at 11:59pm PT. Good luck!

my hiatus and little birdie secrets birthday bash!

Happy birthday to us! Can you believe Little Birdie Secrets is 3?

Five years ago our little family moved from Salt Lake to Seattle. Five years ago my husband started the Orthopaedic Surgery residency program at the University of Washington and I became a residency widow. Alone in a new city with two tiny kids, I learned to find my way around the crazy streets and found all the best parks and explored every beach within 20 miles. I learned to quilt. I honed my crochet skills. I spent a lot of time crafting while my husband was on call.

Then I met the most amazing girls who loved crafting and cooking and wanted to help me start a blog. We crafted because we loved it and wanted to share what we were making with other crafters. Little Birdie Secrets was born. That was three years ago. I can hardly believe it!

Then gas prices skyrocketed. Groceries went up. Interest rates went up. The student loans from medical school came due. Crafting now became my part time job. We introduced sponsors and affiliates to help us pay the expenses of running a craft blog, and to have a little extra for our families in this tough time.

We've heard a few comments from readers lately complaining that there aren't enough crafts here anymore. That you're seeing more giveaways and deals than tips and tricks. I know. I know and I'm sorry. It's difficult feeling that I'm not living up to others' expectations, that I'm letting our readers down. If I had been smarter (and had more time) I would've explained a few things like Vanessa and even Emily have recently. Sometimes readers don't get to see the human side of bloggers, but we're regular people, with families and responsibilities and life changes. And craft blogging is a very time consuming hobby. I apologize that I haven't shown you more of that. So here's why you haven't been seeing the crafts you've come to expect from us.

1. I've been busy creating a human. That's right--baby #3 is on the way! HOORAY! I cannot tell you how thrilled our little family is about this. However, no one told me about one crazy side effect. You've heard of food aversions during pregnancy, like you get sick at the very thought of some foods? Well, during the last almost four months, I have had an aversion to crafting. I know! It is terrible! Way worse than morning sickness and heartburn. I think it has something to do with the tiredness factor. By the time I have some free time to work on a project, I'm so tired that all I want to do is fall on my bed in a pile. And most nights that's exactly what I do. But I'm getting my energy back, and very soon you're going to see lots more maternity and baby projects here. Sweet!

2. I'm preparing to become a Midwesterner. We're moving to Iowa! The past month I've been sorting and piling and selling and packing to get us to ready to move across the country, all by myself. In addition to my other part time job, taking care of my family, volunteering at church, and trying to spend precious last moments with friends, this has left little time for crafting or blogging. Jessica has filled in for me by giving you lots of fun deals and giveaways (she is amazing!), but I haven't posted more than a handful of projects, and I'm sorry. The good news is I won't have to work two part time jobs to help support our family, and I'll be just a few minutes away from where Vanessa will be! I'll have lots more time to craft (and there's a Hobby Lobby a mile away from my house!), so the crafting goodness will begin again soon!

This week my husband graduated as a fully-trained orthopaedic surgeon. I am so proud I'm bursting. He has worked harder than even I can imagine, and done it on almost no sleep. Plus kept up his family, church, and social responsibilities. Man does he need a break! In two weeks we leave for Iowa. We'll be making the trek a family vacation, taking seven days to drive from Seattle to Iowa City, stopping at National Parks and amusement parks along the way. We wanted to do something extra special for our three year blog birthday, but obviously that will be a little difficult with all my crafting supplies packed away and on the road. But have no fear. It's still going to be good!

We love to par-tay. So we've gathered our favorite crafting bloggers from around the blogosphere to help us celebrate! All month you'll see great crafting ideas from some of the best artists and crafty bloggers out there, plus awesome giveaways, prizes, a survey, and a makeover for the blog is in the works! We're not going to let a crazy move and a little aversion to crafting ruin our fun!

We hope you'll forgive my little hiatus and continue to stop by, to be inspired. Thank you for three years of support. For reading, for commenting, for sharing your projects with us. You are the reason we have made it these three years. Here's to many more!
